In the harsh winter of 1634, an idealistic Jesuit priest and his naive young companion are escorted through the wilderness of Quebec by Algonquin Indians, to visit a distant mission. Theirs is a journey fraught with danger and the threat of violence from hostile natives. Father Laforgue (Lothaire Bluteau) opens his heart to the harsh and unforgiving country and its people. His companion Daniel (Aden Young) is drawn to the beauty close at hand, falling in love with fellow traveller Annuka (Sandrine Holt). But as they attempt the arduous 1,500 mile trek upriver, the testing elements and the ever-present shadow of death are never far behind.
