BATMAN

In Tim Burton's hands, this comic book character taps into his brooding side, and Gotham's underbelly writhes in its vices. Bruce Wayne (Michael Keaton) starts to make a name for himself as a masked enemy to the criminal set just when the flamboyant Joker (Jack Nicholson) takes over as tops in the mafia. Adding the art-house hues to a big-budget formula meant major success at the box office, an Oscar for Art Direction and a line of sequels.

BATMAN RETURNS

Trouble returns to Gotham in director Tim Burton's sequel as Batman (Michael Keaton) battles three new villains plotting to take over the city, including corrupt businessman Max Shreck (Christopher Walken), the hideous Penguin (Danny DeVito) and the mysterious Catwoman (Michelle Pfeiffer). This comic book brought to life drew two Oscar nods for its visuals, but its dark themes and violence led Warner Bros. in a lighter direction for Batman Forever.

BATMAN FOREVER

The top-grossing film of 1995, director Joel Schumacher's interpretation of Batman has new villains and a new sidekick as millionaire Bruce Wayne (Val Kilmer) goes up against psychotic Two-Face (Tommy Lee Jones) and the Riddler (Jim Carrey), who have nefarious plans for Gotham City. Joined by Robin (Chris O'Donnell), who wants revenge on Two-Face, Batman pursues the baddies while being seduced by Dr. Chase Meridian (Nicole Kidman).

BATMAN AND ROBIN

Along with crime-fighting partner Robin (Chris O'Donnell) and new recruit Batgirl (Alicia Silverstone), Batman (George Clooney) battles the dual threat of frosty genius Mr. Freeze (Arnold Schwarzenegger) and homicidal horticulturalist Poison Ivy (Uma Thurman). Freeze plans to put Gotham City on ice, while Ivy tries to drive a wedge between the dynamic duo. With winking jokes and powerhouse action, Batman & Robin makes a great franchise addition.
