The story concerns a family that bucks the close-knit timber community in which they live in order to deliver a shipment of logs in defiance of a strike. In the process, one man is killed, the crusty family patriarch, Henry Stamper (Henry Fonda) loses his arm and the eldest son Hank (Paul Newman) almost loses his wife, Viv (Lee Remick) to his half brother (Michael Sarrazin). But as youd expect they never give an inch and the story ends on a proud and defiant note that makes this movie a real classic.
