Sacred Music (Boxset)

The great sacred works - Masses, oratorios and requiems - are among the most moving and sublime creations of classical music. They provide solace and can lift you in ways that mere words can never achieve. This set of DVDs brings together four of these most important sacred works performed by outstanding soloists, choirs, orchestras and conductors.
REPERTOIRE:
DVD 1: Verdi: Messa da Requiem feat. The Symphonica Toscanini from the Basilica of St Mark's in Venice in 2007, commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of Toscanini's death. The concert also features the 11-year-old child prodigy Lorin Maazel.
DVD 2: Beethoven: Missa Solemnis feat. The Saxon State Orchestra of Dresden. Recorded at the legendary inaugural concert that accompanied the reopening of the Frauenkirche in Dresden (2005).This DVD includes a bonus film on the reconstruction of Frauenkirche, destroyed in World War II.
DVD 3: Bach: St John's Passion feat. Masaaki Suzuki and recorded live in Tokyo. Performed by the great Bach expert Masaaki Suzuki and his famous Collegium Japan (2000).
DVD 4: Bach: Mass in B minor feat. the Gewandhaus Orchestra of Leipzig. Recorded in Bach's own St Thomas's Church in Leipzig in 2005. This DVD includes an introduction to the composition by Herbert Blomstedt.
