On July 7th 1990, at the ancient Baths of Caracalla in Rome, Italy, on the eve of the 1990 FIFA World Cup final, Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo & Jos Carrerras, with Zubin Mehta conducting, gave what was to become one of the most memorable classical performances of all time. 6,000 spectators crammed in to watch, although 100,000 had applied for tickets and the massive arena required not one but TWO orchestras to fill it with sound. The original broadcast was shown live around the world and was in instant huge hit [viewing figures on the night were a stupendous 800 million]. The concert went on to sell 12 million copies and became the world's best-ever selling classical album and undoubtedly opened classical crossover to a global audience.
