A whodunnit of the highest order from the "French Hitchcock", Le Corbeau is a gripping film noir in which small-town society cowers under an unseen hand. In the fictional St Robin, a poison-pen letter-writer is terrorizing the inhabitants with barely a soul spared. Le Corbeau (The Raven) accuses them of adultery and deception, petty theft and drug addiction. Torn between a fear of their own exposure and a delight in others' scandals, the hysterical townspeople fly into a flurry of paranoia and malicious finger-pointing, until one of their number turns up dead.
Based on real events which occurred in the provincial town of Tulle in 1917, Le Corbeau can also be seen as one of the most strident depictions of Nazi-occupied France.
